Articling Student Experience: Paige Thomas
"I chose to article at Maurice Law because of the firm’s commitment to meaningful student engagement and its dedication to supporting First Nations in protecting the rights and interests of future generations. From day one, I’ve been encouraged to take initiative and contribute meaningfully to a diverse range of legal work - including drafting legal documents, preparing client presentations, and conducting in-depth legal research.
What has stood out most to me is the firm’s collaborative culture. Maurice Law’s offices work closely together, fostering a dynamic and engaging environment where I have been exposed to evolving areas of Aboriginal law. The lawyers at Maurice Law are not only skilled, but also approachable, supportive, and generous with their time and mentorship. Their guidance has played a key role in my growth as I prepare to transition from an Articling student to a Junior Associate.
What sets Maurice Law apart from many traditional articling experiences is its non-competitive and inclusive learning environment. This culture of support has created a collegial atmosphere among students. I feel the firm has invested in my success - providing me with opportunities to build confidence, work directly with clients, and gain a deep and practical understanding of the legal issues that matter most to Indigenous communities."
Associate Experience: Garrett Lafferty
"As an Associate at Maurice Law, I’ve built meaningful relationships with our clients
through a deep commitment to community engagement at every stage of our work.
From research and claim development to litigation and negotiation, we prioritize
transparency and collaboration. By ensuring that communities are informed and actively
involved throughout the process, we help our clients make decisions that serve not only
current needs but also future generations.
I’ve had the honour of sitting with Elders across Canada, listening to their stories, and
helping ensure their histories are preserved and acknowledged through Oral History
Hearings. These have taken place at various judicial levels, including the Specific
Claims Tribunal, Federal Court, and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. I’ve also had
the privilege of working directly with communities on Indigenous governance initiatives
that support their path to self-determination.
My growth as a legal professional has been shaped by the strong mentorship and
collaborative environment at Maurice Law. Our Partners and Senior Counsel bring
decades of experience in Aboriginal and treaty rights law, and are generous in sharing
their insight. Our internal Research team—particularly our historical Researchers—offers
unmatched support in uncovering and contextualizing the complex histories at the core
of our work. With the strength of this team behind me, I’ve gained invaluable experience
in providing sound, strategic legal advice grounded in both historical context and
forward-thinking legal practice."
