Senior Counsel
Lorne J. Ternes is an experienced lawyer, educator, and negotiator who specializes in building consensus within and between diverse groups. He joined Maurice Law as Senior Counsel in 2019, bringing over three decades of legal experience. Lorne advocates for an interest-based approach to problem-solving, aiming to create informed, respectful environments where parties can engage in meaningful dialogue and resolve complex or potentially contentious issues.
Called to the Alberta Bar more than 30 years ago, Lorne has extensive experience advising on Indigenous and resource development matters. His clients have included First Nations, Tribal Councils, Métis communities and organizations, as well as the federal, Alberta, and Northwest Territories governments.
Lorne has served in a number of high-level roles, including as a Hearing Commissioner for the Alberta Energy Regulator and as Chief Negotiator for the Government of Alberta on Treaty Land Entitlement Specific Claims. He has also been retained by former First Nation clients to act as an Election Dispute Arbitrator and Ratification Officer, reflecting the trust placed in his expertise and impartiality.
Lorne also teaches with the Banff Centre’s Indigenous Leadership Program in Negotiation Skills Training.
