RON MAURICE

Founder & Managing Partner

Ron Maurice is a Métis lawyer, and the Managing Partner and founder of Maurice Law Barristers & Solicitors.

Ron has practiced law since 1991 and has extensive experience in the negotiation and litigation of specific claims, administrative law, trusts, commerical law and financing arrangements, as well as mediation and alternative dispute resolution. Ron represents numerous First Nations across Canada on land claims and Aboriginal and Treaty rights issues including outstanding treaty land entitlements, unlawful surrenders of Indian reserve land and mineral rights, mismanagement of Indian monies, expropriations, infringements on Aboriginal and Treaty rights and associated claims for damages and restitution for the unlawful taking of reserve lands and other resources. Ron has also had experience in Class Actions, including the Indian Residential School Claims.

Ron has extensive litigation experience and has appeared in various tribunals and superior courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Ron has acted as legal counsel in more than 60 Public Inquiries, and in more than 70 cases involving the infringement of Aboriginal and Treaty rights.

Prior to going into private practice, Ron was employed by the pre-cursor to the Specific Claims Tribunal, the Indian Claims Commission of Canada (the “ICC”). Ron joined the ICC as Associate Counsel in 1992, before becoming the Director of Mediation of the ICC in 1994. In 1995, Ron was appointed as Senior Commission Counsel. During his tenure as Counsel to the ICC, Ron was appointed as an Independent technical advisor to the Assembly of First Nations-Canada Joint Task Force on Claims Policy Reform and assisted in drafting proposed legislation to establish an independent Claims Tribunal.

Ron joined private practice in 1998 at the Calgary-based law firm Rooney-Prentice, working closely with the late Premier, Jim Prentice. Ron thereafter founded his own firm in 2002.

Ron has been recognized as a leading lawyer in the area of Aboriginal Law by the Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory.

Ron is proud of his Metis heritage. Ron’s mother, Emilia Maurice, was born in Île-à-la-Crosse Saskatchewan. Ron Maurice’s genealogy can be traced to the Scrip Commission in Treaty 10 territory in September 1906.
